Dear reader, I have created this site
not because I believe that any name is more worthy of study than
another nor do I believe that one's family name means much in who one
is today. The name does not the man make. Rather, I believe that having
an understanding of personal history and context helps shape who one
is and how one relates to the world.
There are many threads in the fabric of
ones personal history. The final cloth is a unique pattern of
culture, class, economic status, race, gender, health, religion and
political belief. This fabric creates a textured background on the
stage upon which one's life is played. The study of one's surname
provides a partial script that answers the question “who am I and
how did I come to be here?” I invite you to join with me as I pull on this thread
called Hetherington.
This blog will follow the name
Hetherington from its origin in Northumberland/Cumbria and its dispersal across the
globe. Its focus is through the lens of Hetheringtons in British
Columbia. It will follow the Reiver, Old English-Irish, The Scot-Irish and The English branches of the family. It will document and
archive family data of potential interest to the descendants of
Robert John McClean Hetherington and other BC Hetherington families.
Finally I will use this blog to discuss and archive all things
Hetherington.
